Reducing Reinforcement

Intrusive thoughts persist because they are reinforced through attention, fear, or resistance. The more importance given to them, the stronger they become. This step focuses on removing that reinforcement by consistently refusing to engage, dramatize, or assign meaning to the thought. Over time, lack of reinforcement weakens the pattern.
